MICRO HYDRO POWER UNITS FOR LIVELIHOOD

Community Owned, Operated & Maintained

Energy & Mountain Development in Remote AreasBack
Role of Energy in Sustainable Mountain Development Improving quality of life - Lighting, drinking water supply, health & sanitation, etc
Supplementing traditional livelihood - Irrigation, value addition to local produce, etc
Opening new employment opportunities - Tourism, processing non-wood forest produce, marketing, IT, etc
Conserving forests and the fragile Himalayan environment - Power for domestic use
Hydro Power Is based on renewable source
Has least impact on the local environment and Himalayan ecosystem
Capable of being easily built and maintained by local people Important Features Local participation and decision-making
Equity
Flexibility in local community contribution – in cash or kind
Construction by community
Training for selected local youth (Grassroots Engineers)
Employment opportunities
Sustainability
Productive application of power for livelihood Advantages in remote areas over supply of power grid Avoids expensive, long transmission lines
Eliminates difficulty to maintain
Economical and efficient, as against un-economical due to poor load Application of power for sustainable livelihood Milling, Oil extraction, Wool Processing - Angora, Pashmina, etc.Dehairing – Pashmina, Carding of Fibre, Spinning, Yarn - Reeling / CountingWeaving, Looms, Vegetable Dying, Value addition / shelf-life of products

LADAKH (J & K)

Set up in 90 days, one micro-hydro power unit of 40 KW, in TIket village (55 families), Kargil district in Ladakh region Development of dehairing-cum-carding machinefor Pashmina for community use.
Ladakh Environment and Health Organisation - using five electricity-operated dehairing- cum- carding machine at Chusot village.
Design and development of efficient spinning wheels - Foot powered and electricity operated for yarn making. Currently used for wool, pashmina, angora, mohair etc.
Families have adopted 35 numbers of these spinning wheels after first demonstration. Currently propagated in Ladakh by LEHO - Ladakh Environment and Health Organisation, Leh and LNP - Ladakh Nutrition Project, Leh Other technical support: Training local artisans on fabrication of looms, warp winders, hanks, etc. UTTARANCHAL

Setting up three micro-hydro power units of 20-kVA capacities in Balganga valley, Tehri Garhwal.
Capacity building through training of local selected persons (4 numbers) on maintenance of hydropower plants, wiring households.
Setting up Village Energy Committees for management of power stations and ensuring local participation- in villages Pinswar and Genwali.
Design and fabrication of turbines of less than 50 kVA capacity
Auto control system for hydropower station based on frequency sensing and diversion of load to heat sinks (developed in collaboration with IIT Delhi).
Design of civil structures such as weirs, gates, spillways, desilting tanks, and canals, fore bay, penstocks, and expansion joints etc.- currently being used in power stations in Uttaranchal.
Training local people on fabrication of solar water heaters. Such waters have capacities of 200,100,50 liters being used at Tripura Devi, Pithoragarh, Uttaranchal
10 highly efficient spinning wheels (designed for Ladakh) currently used at Genwali village as a part of livelihoods based on microhydropower. Five spinning wheels are being used in villages near Tripura Devi, Pithoragarh.
Designed and set up solar air heaters for drying handloom textiles, currently being used at Tripura Devi, Pithoragarh.
