  • EduTour Footnote: Corbett Tiger Reserve is one of India's premier wildlife reserves. Established in 1936 by Jim Corbett (among others) as the Hailey National Park, India's first, and later renamed in his honour, it is one of the Himalayan India's last expanses of wilderness. Almost the entire 1288 sq. Km. Park, spread over the foothills of Kumaon, is sheltered by a buffer zone of mixed deciduous and giant sal forests, which provide impenetrable cover for wildlife. The core area of 520 sq. Km. at its heart remains out of bounds, and safaris on foot are only permissible in the fringe areas.

Corbett is famous for its big cats, in particular the tiger – it was the first designated Project Tiger Reserve in 1973. Despite several challenges the project has proven successful in Uttarakhand (both in Corbett and the nearby Rajaji National Park) than in other reserves. The reservoir within the park shelters populations of gharial, a long-snouted fish-eating crocodile, and maggar, a large marsh crocodile, as well as other reptiles. Other mammal species include the jackal, wild boar, spotted chital, hog and barking deer and the larger sambar. Bird life ranges from water birds to birds of prey, including the crested serpent eagle and the Himalayan grey-headed fishing eagle.

EduTours' Naturalist Associate, Imran Khan, is a trained Wildlife Biologist with more than 20 years of field research and is a leading specialist in nature education, interpretation and field training and a pioneer of Itinerised Wildlife Tourism in Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve; member of the State Wildlife Advisory Boards of Uttarakhand, Assam and Uttar Pradesh; Visiting Faculty Cotton College, Guwahati University, Advisor Nature Tourism to a Wildlife Resort at Zero in Arunachal Pradesh. Under Project Tiger he has trained local youths as Nature Guides and Safari Drivers. Imran Khan now permanently resides with his family near Corbett Tiger Reserve and runs a home-stay facility called The Ranger's Lodge and continues to champion his mission of saving Natural Reserves by putting economic value and benefit for the local community through promotion of sensible wildlife tourism.

  • EduTour Footnote: Sattal or Sat Tal (Hindi for seven lakes) is an interconnected group of seven freshwater lakes situated in the Lower Himalayan Range near Bhimtal, in Nainital district in Uttarakhand. The lakes sit at an altitude of 1370 metres are set among dense forests of oak and pine trees. The seven lakes are Panna Tal (or Garud Tal), Nal- Damyanti Tal, Purna Tal, Sita Tal, Ram Tal, Laxman Tal and Sukha Tal (or Khurdariya Tal). Sattal is unique for its biodiversity and ecological amplitude with 500 species of resident and migratory birds, 20 species of mammals, over 225 species of butterflies and 11,000 species of moths, beetles, bugs and other insects. Flora covers a wide and diverse range of plants ranging from Bryophytes, orchids, rare climbing plants, ferns, lichens, fungi, medicinal herbs and shrubs. There is a rich butterfly museum built by Frederic Smetacek at Jones Estate, which has over 2,500 butterfly and moth specimens and 1,100 species of insects that are found in this region. Sattal is one of the few unspoiled and unpolluted freshwater biomes in India and a paradise for migratory birds. It also represents an ecologically fragile mestrophic group of lakes under the impact of environmental degradation. The lakes also suffer from reduced oxygen content and high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. An extensive growth of invasive plant species such as Lantana, Parthemium and Eichhornia is endangering the ecological survival of the lakes. Lake ecology is also threatened due to deforestation, non-biodegradable waste and unplanned urbanisation of
the water catchments and nearby forest.
